PHOTOS: Spectacular Hungarian Baroque castle to be beautifully renewed

The Carpathian Basin Arts School (Kárpát-medencei Művészeti Népfőiskola) envisioned an aquatic theme cultural centre in a more than 300 hundred years old castle in Hungary. Of course, they will beautifully renew the buildings that are now devastated.

The castle will be entirely renewed

The NGO plans to create a cultural centre in the ruined Meszleny Castle located in Velence, a small village on the shores of Hungary’s third biggest lake, Lake Velence. Therefore, the art school published a public procurement tender on kozbeszerzes.hu, Hungary’s official public procurement website.

The U-shaped castle is in a poor condition currently, and the foundation behind the organisation would like to renew its interior and exterior. In the 2021 autumn, preservative works started on the building because it was in a life-threatening condition. Furthermore, the castle’s roof was renewed, Magyar ÉpítÅ‘k wrote.

László L. Simon, the director of Hungary’s National Museum and a member of the art school board shared some photos of the ruined castle on his Facebook page. They show as if the buildings were at the centre of a battle between two armies. However, he also showed how the building would look after its renovation.

The art school would like to renovate the castle’s park. In the buildings, they would like to rebuild the interior and exterior with modernised machinery, and high and low voltage.

Here are the parameters of the castle:

  • Cellar: 149.8 m2
  • Ground floor: 674.5 m2
  • Loft: 58.87 m2

The plan is to create two functional spaces. One will be the reception room with self-service lockers, an accessible sanitary block, a 362 m2 space for exhibitions and a warehouse. The other one will be for offices, a lounge, a tea kitchen and a bathroom for the staff.

The facade of the Baroque building will also be renewed with new doors and windows. Furthermore, they will create an accessible parking lot and build some roads. They will strengthen the castle’s base and stabilise the ground with injections.

Below are some visuals of the renewed castle. You may find some additional ones in THIS article.

The Meszleny family was the greatest landholder in the region. They had numerous castles in Velence, but this was the oldest. The family built it in the 1700s. It had 18 rooms and was in the aristocratic family’s ownership until 1945. Afterwards, they rented it to a ministry. However, in 1948, the communist leadership nationalised it and used it as a special education institute. It was privatised in 1992. The new owners began to renew the building but never finished it. Since then, the castle’s state has been deteriorating. The art school bought it in 2020.

They should a trade school devoted to restoration of the beautiful buildings in Hungary and that includes the classic fixtures. Some of New projects in Budapest have little beauty that defines the city.
